As for what we're doing in this space: The goal here will be to direct your attention toward some players who you might not otherwise consider. If you're here and reading this, then you already know that LeBron James is really good. But when filling out a roster you can't just pick out stars. You'll blow your cap and get stuck praying to the basketball gods that a guy like Kosta Koufos gets into the game. No, if you want to win, you have to take advantage of certain matchups -- and in order to do that you have to know where to look. That's what we're here for. Also, this space is going to be used to give you advice for the games on Tuesday, Jan. 26. So, with that, let's get started.
3 players to target
DeAndre Jordan, C, Clippers ($7,800): We know Blake Griffin isn't coming back any time soon, which means Jordan can continue to shine. Jordan is averaging 15 points and 13 rebounds in the 14 games the Clippers have played since Griffin initially went down. On Tuesday, he gets to take on the Pacers, who might be forced to go to battle without Ian Mahinmi in the lineup. A 20-20 night could certainly be in play.
Chandler Parsons, SF, Mavericks ($6,400): Parsons got off to a slow start this season as he continued to recover from offseason knee surgery. Lately, though, the Mavericks have let him loose and he's rewarded them for it. He's averaging nearly 40 minutes, 29 points, six rebounds and three assists over his last three games. That he gets to go up against a hapless Lakers defense on Tuesday just makes this matchup more enticing.
Tyler Johnson, PG, Heat ($4,200): Goran Dragic is expected to miss the Heat's Tuesday night tilt against the Nets, which means more time for the former undrafted point guard out of Fresno State. The Heat love Johnson and, more importantly, trust him. He's not going to fill up the box score, but anytime you can nab a player who's likely going to see around 30 minutes of playing time and get him for under $5,000 you have to do it.
3 players to avoid
Carmelo Anthony, SF, Knicks ($8,800): For the first time, maybe, ever, Anthony is playing better than his numbers. He's still struggling from the field (43 percent) and on Tuesday he has to face a Thunder team that is holding opposing small forwards to 32.3 FanDuel points per game, the fourth-best mark in the league (via RotoWire). You're better off spending your money elsewhere.
Brook Lopez, C, Nets ($8,300): The Nets rank 21st in pace. The Heat are No. 29. The two teams face off on Tuesday in a game that's going to be slower than a tortoise in quick sand. That means very few possessions, which means less chances to score and grab rebounds for Lopez. That Lopez has to battle with Hassan Whiteside is another problem.
Thaddeus Young, SF, Nets ($6,600): Everything mentioned above about Tuesday's Nets-Heat game applies here, too. Miami is also great at packing the paint and has plenty of defenders with the size and strength to match up with Young's funky game.
Other Notables
Ish Smith against the Suns, a team allowing the second-most FanDuel points to opposing points guard per night, could be a goldmine. ... It looks like Mavericks center Zaza Pachulia could be out for the team's game against the Lakers. That could mean playing time for the uber-cheap JaVale McGee. ... If you feel the need to spend big on one player, Russell Westbrook against Jose Calderon seems like a good place to start.
