D'Angelo Russell turned his ankle on a driving layup with 2:30 to play in the fourth quarter of the Los Angeles Lakers game against the Sacramento Kings on Thursday. He returned to the game for a few possessions, but eventually left the court with a limp, retreating to the locker room.

The rookie had a career night before twisting his ankle in the final minutes of the fourth quarter.


Russell was having one of the best nights of his young career. The rookie had 27 points on 11-of-16 shooting and led the Lakers back from a 27-point deficit. On the play in which he rolled his ankle, Russell had given the Lakers the lead. Russell led the Lakers on the comeback trail as Kobe Bryant sat on the bench -- Bryant had 28 points on the night.
The Lakers rookie sat out the final minutes of the game as the Kings salvaged a victory by the skin of their teeth, 118-115.
After the game, X-rays on Russell’s ankle showed no broken bones, with the Lakers calling it a “moderate” ankle sprain, per Mike Bresnahan of the Los Angeles Times.
In his 36 games this season, Russell is averaging 12.0 points and 3.4 assists per game.
