Tim Duncan *did not* wear jeans to his jersey retirement

Good morning. We have that and more in Monday’s NBA newsletter.

Soobum Im-USA TODAY Sports

Good morning. Let’s basketball.

THE HORNETS ARE GOOD: Paul Flannery’s Sunday Shootaround focused in on the Hornets, who had a rough patch before correcting matters vs. the Hawks on Saturday. Flanns talk about Steve Clifford, who Marvin Williams cites as the reason he re-signed in Charlotte. They aren’t flashy, they aren’t leading SportsCenter. But the Hornets are indeed good, which is a far cry from where they were when Clifford arrived. Check it out.

HOLY WESTBROOK: Russell Westbrook put together a triple-double animal style against the Suns on Saturday. He had 22 assists, including the prettiest little Shammgod you’ve ever seen. I broke down that highlight in full.

WELPVILLE: Blake Griffin expected to miss a few weeks with a minor knee surgery.

LONE STAR: The Spurs retired Tim Duncan’s jersey on Sunday in a ceremony that turned into something like a Gregg Popovich roast ... until Pop came up and talked about Timmy. Flanns and I talked about how his legacy is best understood through a local prism.

THE BRAWL TO END ALL BRAWLS: Malice at the Palace wasn’t actually the last wild donnybrook we’ve seen in the NBA. That honor goes to the Knicks-Nuggets brawl that happened 10 years ago. Seth Rosenthal explains.

SCORES GALORE ...

Clippers 110, Wizards 117
Kings 79, Mavericks 99
Jazz 82, Grizzlies 73
Nets 107, Sixers 108
Raptors 109
, Magic 79
Celtics 105, Heat 95
Pelicans 100, Spurs 113

SHEESH: The Rockets won their 10th straight game on Saturday, this time by completely breaking Minnesota’s spirit. They are claiming all of the three-point records at this point.

SANTA KAWHI.

SPEAKING OF WHICH ... The Raptor is at it again with the stairs!

WELP CITY: It sounds like multiple Pistons are mad at Reggie Jackson’s shoot-first style.

DIG IN: Eric Pincus obtained a copy of the term sheet that result in the new CBA.

WOW: The Mavericks bounced back on Sunday, but their previous loss to the Jazz was absolutely brutal as Rodney Hood hit a three he shouldn’t have had a clean opportunity to take.

OHHH-M: Malik Monk is a star.

HOW D’ANGELO RUSSELLS ARE MADE.

TANK TIME? Tim Cato joined the Limited Upside podcast to talk about teams that should tank. I also jumped on to talk about the new CBA.

BUMMER: No Festus Ezeli for Portland this year.

MARC YEAH-SOL: Zach Lowe on a shoot-first Marc Gasol.

PALACE INTRIGUE IN SEATTLE: It looks like KeyArena might be renovated after all. But where are they getting a team?

[SIGH]: I’m not going to spill too many syllables on the DeMarcus Cousins vs. Sacramento Bee flare-up. Tim Cato runs it down here. There are lot of layers here and frankly it’s all a little too boring/annoying to bother with.

NEXT UP: Light Monday schedule with just Suns-Wolves on NBA TV (8 p.m. ET). There are two East games of some consequence — Wizards-Pacers (7) and Pistons-Bulls (8) — plus Hawks-Thunder (8).

Be excellent to each other.
