Milwaukee Bucks reportedly compromise players’ financial information in email scam

Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

The Milwaukee Bucks mistakenly released the financial documents of their players when an employee emailed the players’ 2015 IRS W-2 forms to a person impersonating team president Peter Feigin, according to Shams Charania of the Vertical.

According to the report, the security breach included players’ addresses, Social Security numbers, compensation and more. The email scam occurred on April 26 with the Bucks realizing the mistake on May 16. The team emailed players on Wednesday and called the breach a “serious security incident” according to Charania. The Bucks have notified the IRS and FBI about the situation and the NBA and NBA Players Association are also involved.

The report didn’t include details of the email scam, other than an employee sent the financial documents to a person he thought was the Bucks team president. In order to try to minimize the damage to the players, the Bucks have given the impacted players credit monitory and identity-theft restoration services.

The mistake could put the players at serious risk of identity theft and at least one agent called the breach “unacceptable.” It’s unclear how many players were impacted by the leak.
