Cavaliers will host Mario Chalmers, Lance Stephenson, and Kirk Hinrich for free agent workouts

LeBron James has been asking for a playmaker and it looks like the Cleveland Cavaliers are going to try and get him one. The Cavaliers are bringing in Mario Chalmers, Lance Stephenson, and Kirk Hinrich for workouts on Wednesday, along with other free agents.

James has been increasingly unhappy over the past few weeks as the Cavaliers went 7-8 in January, LeBron’s worst team record for a month in the NBA since 2006. Cleveland has also been dealing with injuries to J.R. Smith and Kevin Love. The Cavs have one roster spot open currently, but could have two if they decide to waive Chris Andersen, who is out for the season with a knee injury.

Chalmers knows exactly what it is like to play with James. The two spent four seasons together in Miami, making it to four straight NBA Finals and winning two championships. Chalmers, 30, is currently recovering from a torn Achilles tendon that he suffered in March of last year while playing with the Memphis Grizzles. Chalmers is averaging 9.0 points and 3.8 assists per game for his career. He has plenty of experience playing in a championship environment and could give the Cavaliers the edge they are looking for.

Stephenson also has his own set of experiences with James, playing against each other many times as the Indiana Pacers and Miami Heat battled in the Eastern Conference Finals in 2013 and 2014. Stephenson left the Pacers for free agency in 2014 and has since played for the Hornets, Clippers, Grizzlies, and Pelicans. Stephenson, 26, is also recovering from a groin injury that he sustained in November and required surgery. The Pelicans were forced to waive him for roster reasons. Stephenson, when playing within his lane, can be a fantastic playmaker and defender for any team he is on, which is just what the Cavaliers are looking for.

Hinrich will also get a workout with the Cavaliers. Hinrich is the oldest of the three free agents, getting a workout at 36 years old. Hinrich played for the Bulls and Hawks last year but has not played any minutes during the 2016-17 season. Hinrich has been in the league for 13 years, averaging 10.9 points and 4.8 assists over his career.

The Cavaliers will also workout Jordan Farmar on Wednesday

There is a chance the Cavaliers could add another player before the All-Star break, which begins on Feb. 17. The NBA trade deadline is Feb. 23.
