The Atlanta Hawks and the Cleveland Cavaliers are finalizing a trade involving Kyle Korver, according to The Vertical’s Adrian Wojnarowski. The Cavaliers will reportedly be dealing at least Mo Williams and a heavily protected first pick, according to Basketball Insiders’ Eric Pincus. Mike Dunleavy may also be on the move to a third team, per Wojnarowski.

Cleveland adds important bench depth.

Cleveland has needed to shore up a shallow bench, one made worse when J.R. Smith underwent thumb surgery that will keep him out until the end of the regular season. While the Cavaliers are 26-8 and first in the Eastern Conference, they’ve had LeBron James averaging 37 minutes and Kyrie Irving just under 35 minutes per game.
The Cavaliers signed Dunleavy this offseason, but the veteran has been relatively ineffective. The 35-year-old Korver has shown his age at times this season, but he’s still be nearly as efficient as we’re used to — averaging 9.5 points on 44 percent shooting from the field and 41 percent on five attempts. He’ll be able fill the role of a sharpshooting wing that Cleveland wanted from Dunleavy.
Korver has knocked down 58 percent on wide open threes this season, per NBA.com’s stats tracking, and his 84 effective field goal percentage when spotting up leads the league, per Synergy Sports. The Cavaliers shoot 33 three-pointers per game, second-most in the league, and hit them at a 39.1 percent clip, also second-best in the NBA. With LeBron James passing to Korver, those numbers can get even better.
Though he’s been an effective defender throughout his career, Korver’s abilities on that end are declining. His 106.4 defensive rating while on the court is second-worst among Atlanta’s rotation players. Still, do you want to be the one responsible for stopping a Cavaliers lineup featuring James, Kyrie Irving, Kevin Love, Smith, and Korver?
