Donald Trump fires back at LaVar Ball on Twitter: ‘I should have left them in jail!’

President Donald Trump tweeted on Sunday that he should have left the three UCLA basketball players who were accused of shoplifting in China in jail. This comes in the wake of LaVar Ball, the father of one of the three players, LiAngelo, downplaying the entire incident, including Trump’s role.

Ball, Cody Riley, and Jalen Hill were accused of shoplifting sunglasses from a Louis Vuitton store on Nov. 7 and held at a hotel after they were released on bail. They did not play in UCLA’s game the following night against Georgia Tech and did not fly back home with the team afterwards as their legal situation was still being sorted out.

The players flew home on Tuesday after there was some speculation as to how long they’d be held in China. Had they been convicted of grand larceny, they could have spent up to 10 years in jail, but those involved never believed that was a real possibility. ESPN’s Arash Markazi reported that they would likely be in China for a week or two, and that estimate held true.

The players thanked the President and apologized for their actions in a subsequent press conference and have been suspended indefinitely.
