Kevin Durant got the last laugh in OKC

Good morning. We have that and more in Monday’s NBA newsletter.

Good morning. Let’s basketball.

Kevin Durant and the Warriors visited OKC on Saturday and did exactly what they’d done the first two times they’d played the Thunder this season: beat them with ease. The Thunder don’t have the shooting to keep up with Golden State, and don’t have a single player who can dream of checking Durant.

That didn’t stop Andre Roberson from trying. He and Durant butted heads (literally) in the third quarter after a bit of chirping. There was also chirping between Durant and Russell Westbrook in the second quarter, and (of course) plenty of chirping between fans and Durant. They waved cupcake signs in the air and chanted that word at him regularly, including during the postgame interview with Lisa Salters. In that interview, he said he expected the boos to be louder.

Meanwhile, other Warriors leaned into the experience, with Stephen Curry and Draymond Green donning cupcake t-shirts acquired from fans in the postgame interviews.

Tim Cato, who was on scene, writes that both Westbrook and Durant have seemingly moved on. We all should, as I wrote on Saturday.

... And Plenty More

We have a trade! Jusuf Nurkic is headed to Portland with a pick for [checks Plumlee family tree] Mason Plumlee. Two Plumlees have been traded in a week! This is a most excited trade deadline development. There are interesting ramifications from this deal. Denver is pulling out the stops for a run at the No. 8 seed. Portland is Denver’s closest rival for that spot, and they downgraded the center position in the short term to take on the promise of Nurkic and a pick. Hmm!

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope game-winner!

Interesting timing! James Dolan and Latrell Sprewell buried a 13-year beef a few days after Dolan had Charles Oakley arrested and banned from Madison Square Garden. Meanwhile, Spike Lee wore an Oakley jersey to the Knicks’ national TV game on Sunday.

Eight point guards made the All-Star Game, not including Chris Paul, who is injured. Jonathan Tjarks grades them out.

Fab Melo, former Syracuse big man and Celtics first-round pick, is dead at 26. Sean Keeley has a powerful essay on how the American sports-industrial complex used Melo.

Buddy Hield got ejected for giving Boogie Cousins a poorly disguised cup check. Anthony Davis had jokes after the game.

Amazing! Draymond had a triple-double on Friday ... scoring just four points. He got it with 10 steals. I don’t know if I’m more excited about the first triple-double without 10 points ever or mad he missed the opportunity for an ultra-rare quadruple-double.

Not fair: Giannis Antetokounmpo with one dribble from halfcourt to a dunk, without traveling.

Marc Stein says that Serge Ibaka and Danilo Gallinari are available at the deadline.

This new Nike ad called “Equality” — and starring LeBron, Durant, Serena and a host of other athletes — is very darn good.

Hearkening back to FreeDarko’s landmark liberated fandom, WaPo’s Master Tesfatsion makes the case for bandwagon fandom.

Jabari Parker deserves better than this, by Zito Madu.

The NBA’s memo on Twitter beef did not go unnoticed. The Kings and Hawks had a Twitter lovefest on Friday, and two hockey teams trolled the NBA a couple nights later.

Nice look at Greg Oden’s new life from Jeff Goodman.

Be excellent to each other.
