John Legend is a 10-time Grammy winner and a hell of a musician. No one will ever deny that. But unless you’re Beyonce, pleasing those watching the NBA All-Star game can be a tall task. It’s a given that John Legend will play a mix of his new and old hits, so I’ve put together a setlist that I think will be best for everyone involved.
2017 NBA All-Star Game halftime show: Here is what John Legend should perform
The advice is free, John.

My preferred suggestion is that he only plays songs off his 2004 debut album, Get Lifted. That album is still so good 13 years later. It would be like the time that Pharrell took us through his music catalog in 2014, the last time the All-Star game was in New Orleans. That was a glorious performance.
But since that probably isn’t realistic, the following setlist will do.
“Ordinary People”
Most of Legend’s hits are ballads, and it’s inevitable he’s going to play one. I propose he starts with “Ordinary People” so we can get the ballad out of the way. I’m choosing “Ordinary People” over “All of Me” because everyone has heard the latter 1,000 times too many. We don’t need to hear it again. Run this 2004 classic through the first verse and chorus, and then let’s move on.
“Green Light” feat. Andre 3000
This song is pretty OK. It’s more upbeat than “Ordinary People,” so we can keep the crowd from falling asleep, changing the channel, etc. He can also bring out Andre 3000, which will send Twitter into a fury. Isn’t that the point of every halftime show? Should be. If Andre 3000 just wants to take over the show, that is allowed.
“Used to Love U”
This is the best song John Legend has ever released and you can fight me over that.
“Penthouse Floor” feat. Chance the Rapper
Strong chance you don’t know this song, and that’s OK. But if he’s gonna play stuff we don’t know, it will surely include songs from his new album. So let’s at least get a guest appearance from Chance to make it worth it. Again, at this point, if Chance wants to take over, we will honor that.
“Love Me Now”
It’s his most current song, so you know he’s going to play it. I’m fine with that. It’s a fine song and will be a fine song to close the show. It’s fine.
Alternate songs that will be accepted
- ”Glory” from the Selma soundtrack
- ”Number One” feat. Kanye West from Get Lifted
- ”I Can Change” feat. Snoop Dogg from Get Lifted
That’s it, though. Don’t touch anything else, John. And if all else fails, seriously...just play your stuff from 2004. It was the best. Hi, Chrissy.
