Damian Lillard exploded for 49 points against the Heat’s top-5 defense

Since the All-Star break, Miami has been stopping everyone. But the Heat didn’t have a chance against Lillard.

Damian Lillard roasted the Miami Heat on Sunday, dropping 49 points against one of the hottest teams in the NBA since the All-Star break in a 115-104 win. With 49 points, Lillard came two points short of his own career high while setting a season high. Since the All-Star break, the Heat have the fifth-best defense in the league — but that clearly didn’t matter to Lillard.

Lillard’s evening started hot, dropping 15 points in the first quarter alone. It included two triples, on his way to nine made threes for the game.

Lillard even got up for a driving dunk.

Dame’s final line was 49 points on 14-of-21 shooting, with 9-of-12 shooting from behind the arc and a perfect 12-of-12 showing from the free throw line. He tossed in five assists to just three turnovers, too.

It led to this very good tweet by the Blazers social team.

We’ve seen a rise in 50-point games this season, which NBA coaches can help explain. Lillard fell a point shy of joining this season’s list, but he’s always a threat to drop 50.
