Kevin Durant ‘bust out crying’ after doctors initially told him his leg was broken

Doctors had to call Durant to tell him it was only a bruise.

Kevin Durant injured his leg in February against the Washington Wizards, only two minutes into his homecoming game in D.C. On a weird play, Zaza Pachulia backed into his leg and after trying to play through it, Durant had to leave the game. It was a scary moment for fans and teammates waiting to hear the diagnosis, but it turns out it was far worse for Durant himself.

On the Bill Simmons podcast, Durant talked about the moments after the injury and the initial misdiagnosis of a broken leg that he received from doctors. Durant told Simmons that he heard a crack in his leg, and that it was something he never heard or felt before. When Simmons asked for clarification, Durant described it as a “crunch” and that he tried to play it off, but was unable to focus on anything but his leg.

To make matters worse, this happened at home in Washington D.C. Durant purchased over 70 tickets for family friends, which cost him over $10,000. He barely even played two minutes in the game and wasn’t able to talk to his family after the injury.

The situation got even worse for Durant once doctors told him the initial diagnosis. Durant told Simmons on the podcast, “The first diagnosis we got was that I broke my leg, fractured my tibia and that’s a four or five month recovery. I just bust out crying. I’m like not again.”

As Durant left the arena and was riding in the car, he began to wrap his mind around the fact that he was going to be out until July or August, and what the recovery would entail. He then got a call from the doctors that changed everything. Durant said they checked the CT scan to see the condition of the bone, and found out it was just a bruise and sprained MCL. Durant said, “That reaction in the car was like second to none. That emotional roller coaster that hour, was something out of a movie.”

Durant has been progressing well and the Golden State Warriors think they could still get him back before the playoffs start. Thank goodness the injury wasn’t as bad as initially thought.
