Scottie Pippen says LeBron James has not surpassed Kobe Bryant

Pippen said it’s hard to compare the two.

By now, we’re used to LeBron James being compared to those who came before him. A lot of that comes from the records he’s broken this season.

When Cari Champion asked Scottie Pippen if he thought James had surpassed Kobe Bryant, or would if the Cavs beat the Warriors, Pippen wasn’t so sure.

I don’t think he’s surpassed Kobe at all, no. And I don’t think he should be compared to either of those players. Kobe and Michael [Jordan] are both guards, they’re both scorers ...

Who should we compare LeBron to, then? If you don’t feel those two are a fair comparison?

I’d like to compare him to Magic. He plays a lot more like Magic [Johnson], a lot more like myself, how I played. Obviously he’s more dominant than both me and Magic because of the way he plays the game — his physicality, his athleticism surpassed Magic as well as me.

Then Pippen backtracked a bit and said perhaps James had not surpassed Johnson after all. “They’re both up there. Magic is one of the greatest to ever play the game.”

He did say James was special in that he runs his team in a way Bryant and Jordan never did.
