The Cavs hit new lows in blown 21-point lead to the Magic

Something has to change.

We keep thinking the Cavaliers have hit their absolute lowest, but it’s never true. A blown 21-point lead to the Magic on Tuesday night is the latest disappointment from Cleveland, and it ended in a 116-98 loss. Just hours earlier, a report from The Athletic revealed the nearly fractured relationship between LeBron James and Dan Gilbert.

What a disaster. After the loss, Isaiah Thomas had a strikingly awful line, saying, “When adversity hits, we go our separate ways,” according to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin.

The Cavs were outscored 65-31 in the second half in this collapse, though it should be noted that head coach Ty Lue left the game in the first half with an undisclosed illness. Of course, that’s still no excuse for this kind of loss against one of the worst teams in the league.

The Magic are 17-36, with a bottom-10 offense and defense.

What happened?

The Cavs offense died, while its defense retained its mediocrity. Magic forward Jonathon Simmons scored 22 points in a quarter, nearly matching Cleveland’s entire half. (He finished with a career-high 34.) That’s bad!

Players not named LeBron James scored 73 points for the game on 26-of-67 shooting (39 percent). That’s worse!

Isaiah Thomas had eight assists, but still scored just 11 points on 13 shots. The absence of Kevin Love was noticeable, too. James had 25 points on 10-of-17 shooting, 10 rebounds and five assists, but wasn’t without flaw either turning the ball over six times.

This team is just completely out of sync.

What now?

This is full panic mode for the Cavs. LeBron James has mere months before he has to decide whether to re-sign or not — and this season has done nothing but push him away.

James has already decided he won’t waive his no-trade clause, meaning the only options are to trade and try to make immediate improvements, or ride out a hideous end to the season before suffering an early playoff exit.

The trade deadline is in less than two days, which leaves little time to pull off a blockbuster. But something needs to be done to breathe fresh air into a lifeless roster if they intend to win anymore this season. Or else this season is a total waste.
