The Phoenix Suns lost their 61st game of the season on Sunday, clinching the absolute worst record in the league in a season where that really means something. This means that the Suns will have the best shot at winning the No. 1 overall pick (25%) and a top-3 pick (64%). Perhaps the most important factor is that Phoenix can fall no lower than No. 4 in the draft, a boon in a top-heavy year.
The Suns are officially THE WORST
We have that and more in Monday’s NBA newsletter.

The Suns have actually never in their history had a No. 1 pick. The team’s picked No. 2 twice, both before the lottery era. Phoenix had the league’s second-worst record last season but fell to the No. 4 slot after the lottery. The Suns didn’t have any lottery luck in 2016 either, taking No. 4 with the fourth-worst record. In the lottery era, in fact, the Suns have only had good luck once: in 1987, Phoenix’s envelope got picked second despite six teams with worse record. The Spurs took David Robinson first, and the Suns grabbed ... Armen Gilliam. Scottie Pippen went No. 5. Reggie Miller went No. 11. Oh well.
Let’s see if that sort of luck comes back to the desert this summer, or if a miserable season has a miserable finish. The NBA Draft lottery is May 15.

I wrote about the lack of teeth in the NBA’s anti-tanking threats and how just about every team found a way around rules or just ignored them.

The Celtics aren’t going to do it this year, but their championship window is so wide open it might as well not even exist.
