The Cavaliers and Warriors played an absolutely wild first game of their NBA Finals series. The moments rolled in so quickly that any major event felt obsolete in seconds. We should be used to this in series that involve LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and Kevin Durant, but even in round four, they found ways to surprise.
11 ridiculous moments from the start of the NBA Finals
Game 1 was WILD!

The game ended in a 124-114 overtime victory for the Warriors, but it wasn’t the final minutes that will be remembered. It’s everything that led to the extra five minutes, and the drama that ensued that will.
Here’s every major event from Warriors-Cavs Game 1:
Klay Thompson went down with a brutal looking injury that turned out to be nothing
JR Smith accidentally came crashing down onto Thompson, causing the Warriors guard to fall and have his leg bend awkwardly. It looked bad.
Thompson went back to the locker room limping, worrying fans. But he returned shortly after, and went on to score 24 points on 16 shots.
He was fine.
JaVale McGee missed the easiest dunk ever in the most JaVale McGee way
I’m not sure anyone has the words for what happened here:
Ok, maybe McGee does:
LeBron James got poked in the eye by Draymond Green and it got REALLY RED
It looked unintentional, but Green clocked James in the face as the Cavs star attacked the hoop. James went down to the floor holding his head, but played through an eye injury nobody knew the severity of until the cameras got close and ...
OW.
OUCH.
Of course, James went off for a 51-point night anyway.
Steph Curry hit a ridiculous three to close the half
Who else?
Yes, this recap is just getting to halftime.
A James charge was changed to a block, and Durant swooshed free throws
The Cavs were up by two points with 30 seconds to go when Durant drove the lane and made contact with James. Originally, the play was ruled a charge on Durant with the ball going back to the Cavaliers.
Then, on a closer review, it was reversed.
The ruling was controversial, but referees are allowed to review a block/charge call inside the final two minutes of the game. Those Durant free throws proved costly.
George Hill missed a would-be game-winning free throw
Hill made free throws at 81 percent rate this season, but flubbed the second of two that could have won the game with 4.7 seconds left.
Then things got messier.
JR Smith grabbed the rebound off the free throw, and had no idea the score of the game
The Cavs were tied after Hill’s miss and a bucket would’ve won them the game. For whatever reason, Smith decided to pull the ball out and kill the clock.
There was discrepancy after the game over what went through Smith’s mind.
Smith told reporters, “I was trying to get enough to bring it out to get a shot off,” according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst. “I knew we were tied, I thought we were going to call timeout. If I thought we were ahead, I’d have held onto the ball and let them foul me.”
His coach, Ty Lue, said that Smith didn’t know the score.
His teammate James said ... well that’s for later.
Please enjoy what Green thought, though:
Tristan Thompson got himself ejected
Thompson got ejected for allegedly making a motion with his elbow towards Shaun Livingston’s head in the closing seconds of overtime in a game that was all but decided.
Then, all hell broke loose
Things got chaotic, quick.
James and Curry got into some serious trash talk
It’s rare to see this much emotion out of either of them.
And finally, James walked out of his postgame presser after being asked several times about Smith
James is a loyal friend who did not want to pin blame on a teammate. After refusing to answer the same questions over and over again, he politely walked out and told the reporter to “be better.”
It’s hard to believe this was only Game 1.
