Kyle Anderson’s terrible last 20 seconds against the Nuggets, explained in 20 seconds

Anderson had three opportunities to win the game for the Grizzlies.

Kyle Anderson earned the nickname “Slow Mo” because of the grace with which he plays the game, a patience that is unmatched until he gets to the exact spot on the floor he wants to. That patience backfired on Anderson and the Grizzlies in their one-point loss to the Nuggets on Monday.

“Slow Mo” moved so slow, time went right by him — and it laughed at him on its way out the door.

I count three separate opportunities Anderson had to score then ball on Memphis’ final possession:

  • On the initial catch after setting a screen for Mike Conley: a floater is the best possible shot there. Instead, he pump fakes, travels, then misses a turn-around, fading seven-footer
  • After getting his own rebound. The shot he took wasn’t a bad one, per se. He just has to make it. This is what happens in an era when no one is accustomed to taking mid-range jumpers.
  • After getting his own rebound again, Anderson hesitates, then steps out of bounds before putting up a prayer that actually goes in. This just makes the entire sequence a head scratcher

Either Memphis is trying for a massive tank job in the middle of the season, or Mike Conley should never give the ball up in crunch time ever again. I guess those two things aren’t mutually exclusive.

Free Mike Conley.
