Ja Morant posterized Victor Wembanyama with vicious dunk, but it didn’t count

This would have been an all-time great dunk for Ja Morant over Wemby, but sadly it didn’t count.

Remember when Ja Morant said he wasn’t dunking anymore? So much for that. The Memphis Grizzlies star had his best dunk of the season against the Boston Celtics just days after that viral quote, and he’s continued attacking the basket all year. These days, Morant might prefer unleashing a 360 layup rather than going for the big slam, but he’s still capable of getting up with the best of them.

The Grizzlies’ showdown with the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday night was full of fantastic moments, like Chris Paul literally forcing Victor Wembanyama to tie up Zach Edey for a jump ball. The best play of the game didn’t count. With two minutes left in the fourth quarter, the refs called a foul on Spurs guard Stephon Castle as he was defending Morant’s drive.

Morant kept charging to the paint anywway, where the 7’5 Wembanyama was standing to protect the rim. Maybe Morant didn’t hear the whistle, because he exploded off the ground of a rub-in dunk over Wembanyama. Watch the play here:

I’m shaking my head at the refs for calling that foul. Morant vs. Wembanyama at the rim is as good as it gets.

For my money, Coby White’s game-winning dunk over Wembanyama is still the best poster on the Spurs giant’s head. Morant’s would have been even more spectacular if it counted.

The Grizzlies beat the Spurs, 129-115. Morant had 21 points in the win, while Wembanyama finished with just 13 points in the loss.
