Noa Essengue’s Summer League poster is the NBA’s first meme of the season

Welcome to the NBA.

James Dator
James Dator has been covering a wide range of sports for SB Nation for over a decade, with a special focus on the NFL.

Nobody in the NBA likes being put on a poster, and Bulls rookie Noa Essengue didn’t need to wait long before being put on one. The youngster balled out against the Pacers on Monday night, but nobody will remember his 21 point performance, because this happened.

Everyone is destined to be put on a posted at some point in time, but it goes to an entire other level when you’re getting dunked on by Michael Cera’s NBA equivalent, while sporting the same look of terror on your face as an explorer right before they’re annihilated by King Kong.

Obviously this was just the perfect embarrassing moment frozen in time, but goodness it makes for one hell of an image. There is perhaps nothing I love more than a sports photo where it looks like a player is scream-crying in agony, which is why one of my favorite pictures of all time is crying Matt Barkley.

It wasn’t long before the Essengue pic went viral, courtesy of a little boost from some friends in high places.

It didn’t take long before the internet was on board and everyone was trying to get their licks in.

Here’s Essengue’s full highlights from Monday’s Summer League game. He looked great, but everyone is talking about the poster. It’s brutally unfair, but so are sports.
