On Wednesday, Chaminade built a halftime lead on Oklahoma, then held on to surprise us all for a 68-64 win at the Maui Invitational. Silverswords’ Shane Hanson led his team to the upset with 23 points.
Chaminade Upsets Oklahoma At Maui Invitational, 68-64
Chaminade took a 33-30 lead into halftime, and built a 62-53 lead in the second half before Oklahoma stormed back to tie it. The Silverswords then made a crucial handful of shots to re-build a lead that stuck until the buzzer. Steven Bennett chipped in with 16 points, and Mamadou Diarra contributed 15.
The Oklahoma Sooners aren’t ranked, but their are a Division-I team just like every other team at the Maui Invitational... except for tiny Chaminade, who is Division-II. The Silverswords are most famous for upsetting then-top-ranked Virginia in 1982 despite an enrollment of 900 and a head coach who had to work two jobs to make ends meet:
