You probably haven’t heard of Taylor University, but according to Wikipedia it’s a university located in Upland, Indiana with about 1,900 students. They also have a basketball team, and each year, they host maybe the most awesome holiday tradition in college sports:
‘Tis The Season To Check Out The Best Tradition In College Hoops
Every year, the men’s basketball team hosts the “Silent Night” game, where fans sit in silence until Taylor scores its tenth point of the game. Then they go nuts, obviously. And when it’s all over?
Jump to the 2:30-mark to hear the crowd’s rendition of “Silent Night”:
“Sleeeeeeeep in heavennnnnn-ly peeeeeeeace. Sleeeeeeeeep in heavennn-ly peace.”
Pretty simple concept, but the execution is just about flawless, and really, who doesn’t like singing Christmas Carols? Why hasn’t anyone else thought to sing them at a basketball game? It’s a Lessons and Carols service with ten times more awesomeness, and you don’t have to worry about embarrassing yourself in front of the priest at communion.
So thanks to the Dagger for the tip, and here’s to hoping this catches on elsewhere. Or everywhere, maybe. Because there’s really never a bad time to sing Christmas Carols at a basketball game.
