The University of Tennessee has seen its fair share of turmoil in the past eighteen months. There was the most hilarious attempted robbery ever, a massive bar brawl, Lane Kiffin’s acrimonious departure, the Vols basketball players getting caught with guns and drugs, and most recently, Bruce Pearl’s 8-game SEC suspension.
‘Free Swiperboy!‘ And Tennessee’s Most Ballin’ NCAA Violation Yet
Next to all that, the school’s latest infractions controversy is pretty refreshing:
Tennessee men’s basketball player Renaldo Woolridge shot a “three phase” music video early Sunday that may indirectly hit the UT athletic program with another NCAA violation.
Eight hours after the Vols’ 72-61 loss at No. 8 Connecticut on Saturday, Woolridge received exclusive access to the upstairs portion of New Amsterdam Bar ... free of charge, a bar source ... told the News Sentinel.
Uh-oh. Can’t say “free of charge” in a college town without saying “NCAA investigation” immediately afterward. Just like you can’t say “three phase” music video, without, um, wondering what that means. And then you say... MAN I HAVE NO IDEA BUT DON’T IT SOUND SO BALLIN?
This isn’t the music video in question, but a sample of Renaldo “Swiperboy” Wooldridge’s work on the microphone. And let me be the first to say, FREE SWIPERBOY.
If the NCAA seriously decides to prosecute this, it’s unlikely it’ll result in any major violations. In other words, we may as just cherish this story for its hilarity, if not relevance:
On his official website, Woolridge, in a video blog shot during the team’s flight Thursday night to Connecticut, promoted the impending production of a video for his latest single, “Snap Back.” Woolridge has filmed a number of rap videos since arriving at UT in 2008, including a university-sponsored promotion during former football player Eric Berry’s Heisman trophy campaign in 2009.
And if there’s any lesson to be gleaned for future SEC athletes looking to ball out and live the hip-hop lifestyle to the fullest, it’s this--wait till you’re drafted. Like Joe Haden. I have no idea whether he’s shooting a music video with this, but if not, then he should be.
