Xavier is aiming to make a run in the 2012 NCAA Tournament after being bounced in its first game in 2011. But the Musketeers will begin their season without one of their veteran leaders: Tu Holloway will be suspended for the first game of Xavier’s season for a secondary violation of an NCAA rule, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer’s Shannon Russell.

And the rule Holloway violated is apparently the sort that may inspire derisive snorts at the NCAA. Russell writes:

Sources believe Holloway played in two summer leagues. The NCAA allows players to compete in one.Holloway would miss Xavier’s season opener against Morgan State on November 11, and would be eligible for a November 15 game with Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne.

Holloway was one of college basketball’s most important players in 2010-11, playing 38.4 minutes per game, the sixth-largest share of minutes in Division I men’s basketball. And Holloway averaged 19.7 points and 5.4 assists per game while leading Xavier to a 24-8 record.
