This wasn’t a close game where the underdog barely squeaks away with an upset. Loyal Marymount played a solid game on Friday night and flattened No. 20 UCLA en route to a 69-58 win. The matchup was the season-opener for each team, played at Los Angeles Sports Arena, the Bruins’ temporary home while Pauley Pavilion is being renovated.

Loyal Marymount kept the Bruins at arms-reach for much of the second half, extending its one-point halftime lead as the game wore on. The Lions were lights out from beyond the arc, hitting 10-15 three-point attempts, a 66.7 percent clips. For the game, Loyola Marymount shot 42.9 percent from the field, hitting 29 of its 63 shots.

The Lions got a strong effort from a duo of players -- each scoring more than 20 points -- in the win. Ashley Hamilton put up 23 points to lead all scorers while Anthony Ireland added 21. Ireland also grabbed a team-high five rebounds.

UCLA was led by Reeves Nelson and David Wear, who each scored 13 points. Travis Wear added 11 points and Tyler Lamb finished with nine. Josh Smith was ineffective throughout, scoring five points and grabbing four rebounds in the loss.
