The No. 3 Tennessee women’s basketball team earned a huge early-season non-conference victory Tuesday night against one of the ACC’s best teams, the No. 7 MIami Hurricanes, 92-76. The perennial national championship contender Lady Vols were simply too much for the nouveau-riche Miami squad, who, despite 24 points from Riquna Williams and a halftime tie-score, could not hang with Pat Summitt’s team.
Miami Vs. Tennessee 2011 Recap: Lady Vols Run Away From UM, 92-76
Pat Summitt and the No. 3 Lady Vols defeated the No. 7 Miami Hurricanes Tuesday night in a top-10 showdown in women’s b-ball.
The Lady Vols were led by Taber Spani and her 20 points, as she and her teammates stormed out of the locker room after the half to go on an 18-4 run and effectively seal the game then, despite some runs to close the gap by the Hurricanes, the deficit was never less than five.
There have been concerns about Summitt’s health, with offseason reports that she was showing early signs of dementia, but her team was sharp and she let them have it in the locker room according to the AP:
“If you ever doubt if Pat Summitt is still coaching, look at how our team responds coming out in the second half,” associate head coach Holly Warlick said. “She got on them pretty hard. We all did as a staff about our rebounding effort, our hustle plays that weren’t there. We challenged them for 20 minutes, and I think they responded.”
