The UCLA Bruins finally have their first win of the season, destroying the Chaminade Silverswords 92-60 in the first round of the 2011 Maui Invitational on Monday evening.

At first glance you might think the Bruins cruised the entire game, but it was closer than anyone expected early, with the Bruins entering the break with a minuscule 40-38 lead over their Division II hosts from Hawaii. Ben Howland’s halftime speech must have been riveting, because the Bruins dominated 52-22 the rest of the way.

Lazeric Jones posted team-high marks for UCLA with 19 points and seven assists, while his backcourt mate Tyler Lamb chipped in 15 points five boards, two steals and three blocks. Jerime Anderson added 18 points, doing most of his damage from behind the three-point line, where he shot 4-of-6.

Reeves Nelson, in his first game back from a team suspension, scored just a single point but added five boards, a steal and a block in 11 minutes of the bench.

Lee Bailey led Chaminade with 16 points and three assists.

The Bruins improved to 1-2 on the season, and will face the winner of the Kansas-Georgetown game in the next round. Chaminade fell to 3-1.
