Playing in the Paradise Jam championship game in the U.S. Virgin Islands, No. 19 Marquette was operating on island time for a stretch in the second half, squandering a 14-point lead while allowing the Norfolk St. Spartans to mount a comeback and tie the game. The Golden Eagles eventually snapped out of their funk to win 59-57, but it never should have been that close.

After the game, Marquette coach Buzz Williams said he thinks the fact his team almost threw this game away will serve as a wakeup call.
“That’s good for us,” he said, according to the AP. “This experience will grow us up. I’m thankful we were able to win, but this experience will be helpful for us later on.”
Darius Johnson-Odom led all scorers with 20 points for Marquette, with teammate Jae Crowder adding 14 and 11 boards. Chris McEachin and Kyle O'Quinn led the Spartans with 10 points apiece. O'Quinn was also the game's leading rebounder, hauling in 13 boards.
