What are slam dunks for? Seriously, two points aside, what is the purpose? Specifically, the purpose of a 360-degree rotation in the air before throwing it down? This is what Louisville's Peyton Siva did on Friday night...
No, You See, Peyton Siva HAD To Make That 360-Degree Dunk
...and when Bob Knight took him to task for it, Siva explained why it was necessary:
“That’s Bob Knight, he’s going to tell you to lay it in,” Siva said. “If I would have laid it in I probably would have gotten blocked by Coombs trailing me so I just tried to do an acrobatic move to get away from him.”
Nevermind that the defender was staring at Siva’s back as he drove to the rim, and that the 360-degree rotation, if anything, increased the chances of a strip or a foul. It’s not his problem.
Similarly, it's not dunkmaster Blake Griffin's problem that he isn't the best player in the NBA. Basketball rules need to be re-written to reward slam dunks -- acrobatic dunks, in particular -- above all else. But they aren't, and we have lame-os like Rajon Rondo and John Wall dominating the sport. Sigh.
