UConn’ student newspaper, The Daily Campus, covers all aspects of student life at the university, including athletics. So you’d imagine that at least one person on their editorial board was a sports enthusiastic of some kind. In other words, you’d think there would be at least one person who stepped in and stopped this editorial about how UConn fans are too loud and too mean to opponents at home games.
Hey UConn Students, Stop Making Noise And Being Mean
Since the beginning of the season back in November, when the starting lineup and coach for the opposing team are announced at the start of the game, the entire student section will turn their backs to the court, yelling "Sucks!" after each player's name is announced. This creates the effect of the sentence being, for example, "Marshon Brooks sucks!" – which is not only rude, but completely false.
Home basketball fans saying the opponent’s best player sucks? See what you’ve done to our country, you God-less liberals?
The editorial continues to chastise home fans for making noise in order to disrupt the visitor’s huddle during timeouts and destroy “the very essence of what a sporting competition is supposed to be.”
At the very least you’d think they would have turned on ESPN to see if other college fans were doing the same thing, thereby learning that by most standards, the issues they have with Husky fans are rather tame. God forbid they ever watch a West Virginia home game.
