Villanova Vs. Notre Dame: When Will The Bleeding Stop For Wildcats?

The Villanova Wildcats lost 93-72 to Notre Dame on Monday night but the truth is it wasn't even that close. The Cats were down by more than 30 points at some moments and this lose has to be a nadir in what's been a rough couple weeks for Wildcat fans.

The Nova Blog is left to pick up the pieces and try and make sense of this. From what they can gather, not one but two Notre Dame players had career nights against them on Monday, and they didn’t help matters.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish came out and hit 11 3-pointers in the 1st half. Eleven. Let that sink in. So you would think that not much else could get worse for the Villanova Wildcats. Wrong.

Ben Hansbrough and Tim Abromaitis had literally the best games they'll ever have in college basketball. I'm not kidding at all. If you don't believe me check out the box score.

Meanwhile Notre Dame blog Rakes of Mallow did a running commentary of the entire game. They picked a good night to do it as their Irish locked up a double-bye in the Big East Tournament:

So what do we take from this evening? Well, if you want to beat the Irish, you need to defend the three a little better than Villanova did. Notre Dame also has locked up a double-bye in the Big East Tournament, and has a very high chance of finishing second. They are still in the hunt for a regular season league title, but it will be tough. They need to win at Connecticut – a team they beat at home in early January without the service of Carleton Scott – and need Pitt to either lose at South Florida or at home to this same Villanova team.

Both teams are heading in very different directions as the Big East Tournament, and NCAA Tournament, loom.
