Georgia Tech fired basketball coach Paul Hewitt earlier Saturday, in a move that's hardly a shock in and of itself. Hewitt's Yellow Jackets had stagnated badly after an appearance in the 2004 NCAA Final Four, and now was the appropriate time to let him go, considering he went just 5-11 in the ACC and had a losing record overall despite having Iman Shumpert on his team.
Georgia Tech Pays Paul Hewitt $7.2 Million Not To Coach
But what’s a little more remarkable is that Georgia Tech was willing to eat a lot of money in order to make Hewitt go away. How much? Try $7.2 million.
Hewitt will be paid $7.2 mill over five years, every month, DRad just said.
In an era where lots of NCAA programs are losing money, that’s a remarkably steep price to pay. To put it another way, that’s about $120,000 per month and $3,941 dollars per day for the next five years just so Hewitt can sit on his butt at home. Hewitt may have been a very bad coach, but that’s a pretty sweet little deal he worked out on his way out.
In other words, we shouldn’t be surprised when Hewitt fades into anonymity. Why work when you have that kind of severance package?
