VIDEO: Dick Vitale Rants Against The 2011 NCAA Tournament Bracket

Just as quickly as the 2011 NCAA Tournament selection committee set the field for March Madness Sunday night, critics popped up in every direction to criticize their choices. But none did it quite as loudly as Dick Vitale. If you didn’t see it on ESPN, you’ve probably heard about it by now.

Vitale chastised the committee for both the teams they included, and the teams they left out. Here’s video:

Aside from his trademarked brand of crazy on full display, Vitale gets bonus points for his Colorado analogy there. Describing the Buffaloes vs. VCU and UAB, the two shakiest teams included this year, he said if you put them side-by-side, it’d be like a beauty contest between Roseanne Barr and Scarlett Johannson. Which... Okay, that’s perfect.

But as far the overall tenor of Vitale’s rant? How ‘bout we all tone it down a little bit. Yes, Colorado got screwed and VCU and UAB are both incredibly shaky additions to the 2011 field.

But it’s not like this is new, right? It amazes me that Vitale analyzes this stuff every year and still feigns outrage in the name of a team like Colorado, who wouldn’t have made it past the first or second round regardless. I guess that’s why he gets paid the big bucks? For my money, Vitale’s rant was entertaining, but as the analysis rolled on through the night on Sunday, I couldn’t help but wonder, “Why does everyone keep yelling?”

The NCAA Tournament is almost here, and if you want to be upset about anything, it should be some of the seeding (Florida at no. 2? No Kemba-Jimmer showdown? Notre Dame with a cake walk to the elite 8?), and not the last two or three teams that did or didn’t make it.

Besides, let’s keep our eye on the ball: If we’re going to rant about anything, it should be that Thursday and Friday aren’t national holidays yet, and that Gus Johnson still hasn’t taken Jim Nantz’s place at the Final Four. Other than that? Let’s all just be glad that March Madness is back.
