Who Would Have Expected Jay Bilas To Be So Great On Twitter?

First of all, Jay Bilas went to Duke.

Second, Jay Bilas seems like he went to Duke, which is even worse. As a college hoops analyst, he has a knack for coming across as a little condescending and occasionally sanctimonious, and he’s also got Cris Collinsworth’s trademarked gift of explaining things that are self-explanatory. Maybe not totally hateable, but not really likable, either.

All of which is to say, when he joined Twitter, not many of us were expecting Charlie Sheen or Ghostface-type brilliance. But upon closer inspection... The stories he tells are actually fun? Jay Bilas has a personality? He’s sorta great? I’m still not sure what to make of this.

He pokes fun at himself:

...And others:

And it’s all actually funny. Not in a hokey, old-man-making-jokes kind of way, either. Jay Bilas is legitimately one of the best sports personalities to follow on Twitter, mixing real analysis with actual wit, and coming across as a pretty genuine dude that doesn’t take any of this stuff too seriously.

Maybe he’s been that all along, and my blinding hatred for Duke has just made it impossible to accept him as anything more than another stiff spawned from that awful, joyless basketball family down in Durham. Or maybe this is new, and joining Twitter has given Bilas a little more room to have fun with college hoops. In either case, it begs the question: Jay Bilas is awesome now?

Yep, he seems pretty awesome.
