With their impressive win last night over St. Mary’s in the WCC championship game, Gonzaga locked up its 13th consecutive NCAA bid. Only five other programs have made it to the last 12 NCAA Tournaments, and while Duke, Kansas, Wisconsin, and Texas will all join Gonzaga in making it 13 straight, Michigan State is very much on the bubble.
Gonzaga Is Dancing (Yet Again), But What About St. Mary’s?
↵Speaking of which, what about St. Mary’s? Most bracket projections this week had them in the field, but as Mid-Major Madness notes, it’s not exactly a sure thing. St. Mary’s RPI currently sits at 46 and the Gaels have just one win against the RPI Top 50 (a home win vs St. John’s) and only three wins over the RPI Top 100. That’s not much better, if at all, than Michigan State (RPI of 48, three wins vs RPI Top 50), a team widely considered to be one of the last four in.
↵The expanded field of 68 teams will certainly help, but it’s going to be a very nervous Selection Sunday for St. Mary’s.
