Today, the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved adding a physical charge arc to the paint in men’s and women’s Division I basketball, providing referees with a clear delineation between where a defender can and cannot stand while attempting to take a charge. Coaches welcome the idea, and with good reason.
NCAA Rules Committee Approves College Basketball Charge Arc: Bye Bye, Butler?
As SB Nation Seattle notes, the Pacific Northwest’s coaches seem to be okay with the move, at least according to what they told Sportspress Northwest’s Todd Dybas.
Lorenzo Romar tells me he thinks the arc addition is “great.” Very happy with the change. WSU coach Ken Bone also pleased with arc. Talked to a few coaches this morning, prevailing thought: It’s about time. This should also cut down on collisions underneath the basket, often the kind that lead to serious injuries and concussions. Sure, the NBA’s charge arc doesn’t mean that league’s referees always get charging/blocking calls correct — and college basketball’s adoption of the rule means that it will be harder for teams like Butler to ride suffocating defense underneath the hoop to NCAA Tournament success — but the reduction of injury risk and addition of clarity make this a potentially very popular move.
