Michigan Recruit Austin Hatch Showing Signs Of Recovery

In case you missed it over the weekend, the story of Michigan basketball recruit Austin Hatch is unspeakably tragic. He and his family were in a plane crash Friday night, the second plane crash of Hatch’s young life. The first claimed his mother and two siblings. The second, this past weekend, claimed the lives of his father and step-mother, and left the younger Hatch in critical condition.

But there’s at least some good news, now. After the doctors induced a coma to stabilize him, the Associated Press reports the youngest Hatch is showing signs of improvement:

[His doctor] said Austin’s brain swelling was going down and he had been moving all four limbs when doctors reduce the coma-inducing drugs they placed him on after Friday’s crash.

Hatch remains in critical condition and there’s no timetable for his return to consciousness, but the doctors haven’t found any structural damage, and they’re hopeful that he could eventually make a full recovery.

It’s the sort of nightmare scenario that defies all logic, but if Hatch can survive and recover, the nightmare story could give way to a small miracle. For now, our thoughts and prayers are with Austin, 17, as he fights to snatch a blessing from the jaws of a horrible, horrible tragedy.

Just a few weeks ago, Hatch committed to play basketball at the University of Michigan. Here’s to hoping he’ll be able to fulfill that commitment one day.
