On Sunday, there was a report that University of Connecticut president Susan Herbst was about to have the university buy out the contract of athletic director Jeff Hathaway, amid concerns about Hathaway’s ability to raise funds and ensure the university’s teams complied with NCAA rules.
UConn Confirms It’s ‘Evaluating School’s Athletic Department’
It now looks like that report was accurate - Herbst does indeed confirm that she has “initiated an evaluation of the school’s athletic department,” the AP reports, and that fundraising and compliance are key reasons why.
By most measures available to us as outsiders, UConn’s athletic department has performed brilliantly during Hathaway’s tenure, as the AP report suggests. The mens’ basketball team won the NCAA championship this year, the womens’ team is a powerhouse year in and year out, the football team went to a BCS bowl (despite honestly not being particularly good), and two baseball players were picked in the first round of the MLB Draft.
But there have been recruiting violations for the mens’ basketball team, and Hathaway and mens’ coach Jim Calhoun do not get along.
