Bob Knight retired as the Texas Tech basketball coach in 2008, but has remained on the Red Raiders’ payroll in a fundraising capacity ever since. He’ll be removed from the team’s payroll next Wednesday, however, as the school’s new athletic director continues to cut its budget.
Bob Knight, ESPN Employee, To Come Off Texas Tech Payroll Next Week
That wouldn’t typically be any sort of big news, but the Hall of Famer has been employed by ESPN as an on-air sports personality for the past three years and this no doubt has brought up at least a couple of conflicts of interest.
This isn’t to say that Knight wouldn’t have picked the underdog Red Raiders against Texas that Saturday anyway considering he coached at the school eight seasons and his son, Pat, was still there as the Hall of Famer’s successor on the basketball team.
It is interesting that nobody called ESPN out regarding some sort of conflict of interest in Knight’s duties, though. Even if they had, however, the coach probably would have readily abandoned his $24,000 salary with the school in order to continue with duties at the World Wide Leader.
