This is a relatively tragic story. Notre Dame basketball recruit Eric Katenda was poked in the eye this summer at a D.C.-area pickup basketball game, and after being hospitalized for a few days, doctors told him he would never regain vision in the afflicted eye, according to Blueandgold.com.
Notre Dame Basketball Recruit Eric Katenda Is Now Blind In One Eye
Incoming Notre Dame basketball recruit Eric Katenda was poked in the eye during a pickup game this summer, leaving him permanently blind in one eye, doctors say.
Fighting Irish head coach Mike Brey has reached out and told him he could stay on scholarship if he’s not able to play basketball again, according to the story:
"I'm not sure what's going to happen," Katenda told Blueandgold.com. "They've been really great and they just didn't forget about me. I can still go there and get my education. I thank God for the coaching staff at ND. They've been great."
Katenda wouldn’t have even been playing in the game had the NCAA Clearinghouse not made him re-take “a disputed Introduction to English course” (Katenda is French), preventing him from enrolling at South Bend in the summer. He had taken the original class as sophomore, in Connecticut, but finished his high school career in Bel Air, Kans. We wish him well.
