Big East founder and longtime athletic administrator Dave Gavitt has died at the age of 73, according to his family. On a day that has included news about the Big East as we know it imploding, it’s very spooky timing, as Mike Rosenberg noted.
Dave Gavitt, Founder Of Big East, Dies At 73
The Big East founder died at the age of 73 on Friday night.
Eerie that Big East founder Dave Gavitt died the weekend the league is falling apart. A true legend. Sad news.Gavitt was Providence’s athletic director for much of the 1970s, then served on a committee that created the original seven-team Big East in 1979. That was likely the crowning achievement of Gavitt’s career in athletics — the Dave Gavitt Trophy is given to the winner of the Big East Men’s Basketball Tournament — but it was far from the only one.
He was selected as the coach of the 1980 U.S. Olympic men’s basketball team, then lost the opportunity when the United States decided not to send a team to Moscow; later, he served as the CEO of the Boston Celtics and the president of the NCAA Foundation.
