Former Coach Charlie Spoonhour Dies At Age 72

Former Missouri State, Saint Louis and UNLV coach Charlie Spoonhour died Wednesday morning at his family’s home in North Carolina at the age of 72.

Former Missouri State, Saint Louis and UNLV coach Charlie Spoonhour died Wednesday morning at his family’s home in North Carolina at the age of 72.

In 2010, he was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and received a lung transplant in 2010 from Duke University Medical Center.

After an assistant stint at Southwest Missouri State, Spoonhour moved on to Nebraska before retuning to SMSU to shepard the program into Division 1 as it's head coach. He would lead the Bears to five NCAA Tournament appearances in six seasons

In 1992, he left to take over the Saint Louis Billikens, whome he led to three NCAA tournament appearances in seven seasons. In 2001, he went hired by UNLV, where he coached until retiring following the 2003-04 season. His career record was 373-202 and included eight total NCAA Tournament appearances and five conference crowns.

A moment of silence will be observed at Missouri State men’s basketball game against Wichita State on Wednesday night. Spoonhour is survived by his wife, Vicki, and two sons, Jay and Stephen.
