Purdue Guard D.J. Byrd Arrested For Public Intoxication

Purdue guard D.J. Byrd was arrested Thursday night for public intoxication. There is no word yet on his availability for Sunday’s game against Michigan State.

D.J. Byrd was arrested on charges of public intoxication late Thursday night. The junior guard for the Purdue Boilermakers was booked by Indiana State Police into Tippecanoe County Jail at 3:35 a.m., and was released at 8:31 a.m. Friday morning. There is no word yet on what kind of punishment he faces, but head coach Matt Painter has been notified.

“I am aware of the D.J. Byrd situation and I am still gathering information on it,” Painter said.

Byrd's arrest obviously puts a major damper on his season. Painter has shown little tolerance for player transgressions in the past. Last season, he suspended guard Kelsey Barlow for the NCAA Tournament for an unspecified team violation. At the very least, Byrd's status for Sunday's game against Michigan State should be considered in serious jeopardy.

As Purdue blog Hammer And Rails notes, Byrd had been playing a larger role lately on the court. He scored in the double digits in each of the Boilermakers' last five games, including back-to-back 20-plus performances against Ohio State and Northwestern.
