Matt Doherty Fired By SMU After 6 Seasons
SMU has fired basketball coach Matt Doherty after producing just one winning season in six years.
Doherty, the former coach of North Carolina and Notre Dame, was 80-109 in six seasons with the Mustangs, capped by a 13-19 season that ended with a loss last Wednesday in the first round of the Conference USA tournament. He had just one winning season at SMU, a 20-15 campaign in 2010-11 that resulted in an appearance in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament.
Doherty has one year remaining on his contract and is expected to be bought out for $500,000. Still, SMU athletic director Steve Orsini likely felt an immediate move was necessary as the program prepares to the make the jump to the Big East in all sports in 2013.
After a tumultuous three-year stint at North Carolina, Doherty spent a season as the coach at Florida Atlantic before accepting the job at SMU. His career record currently rests at 169 wins to 178 losses.
