NIT Tournament 2012 First Round: Seton Hall Holds Off Stony Brook

It was a cruel ending to Stony Brook’s season.

First, as the regular season champions, they were upset by Vermont in the finals of the America East Conference Tournament, preventing a trip to the Big Dance.

Second, their season came to an end at the hands of Seton Hall tonight in the first round of the NIT, losing 63-61.

The Pirates were led by Thordon Theodore’s 21 and Herb Pope’s 20 points, and held off the Seawolves in the waning moments despite going scoreless in the game’s final 1:48. Pope grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, while Theodore led the team with six assists.

Outrebounded 42-22, Seton Hall limited Stony Brook from beyond the arc, who shot 6-24 from the three-point line and gave up too many easy baskets inside to spur the upset.

The top-seeded Pirates will march on to face the winner of the UMass – Mississippi State game in round two of the tournament.
