Mississippi State basketball coach Rick Stansbury will announce his retirement Thursday afternoon during a press conference. This according to Jeff Goodman of CBSSports.com.
Rick Stansbury Retiring After 14 Seasons At Mississippi State
After 14 seasons in Starkville, Miss., head coach Rick Stansbury is calling it quits.
Though “retire” might be the word used by Stansbury and Mississippi State, there’s no question that the coach was feeling extreme heat from a number of different angles after wrapping up another disappointing season in Starkville. The Bulldogs were nationally ranked in both polls during the early part of the season, but dropped six of their last eight games and missed the NCAA Tournament. They fell to Massachusetts in the first round of the NIT on Tuesday.
Mississippi State reached the postseason in 11 of Stansbury’s 14 seasons, but it never advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. Five of those postseason appearances came in the NIT.
The program had also been plagued by off-the-court issues in recent seasons, including a fight between teammates in the stands, multiple suspensions for violations of team rules, and star center Arnett Moultrie saying "probably not" when asked if he thought his team had the resolve to turn things around late this season.
Stansbury had two years left on his deal worth about $1.3 million per season. He was 293-165 over his 14 seasons at MSU.
