Dan Hurley Named New Basketball Coach At Rhode Island
Dan Hurley has been hired as the new head basketball coach at Rhode Island, where he will replace Jim Baron.
“We are thrilled to name Dan Hurley as our new head men’s basketball coach,” director of athletics Thorr Bjorn said. “Dan is a proven winner at every level and I am looking forward to partnering with him to build on the solid foundation we have in place. Our goals are to compete for - and win - Atlantic 10 Championships and advance to play in NCAA Tournaments.”
Hurley, who comes to Rhode Island from Wagner, will be bringing his bother Bobby, a former star at Duke and first round NBA draft pick, with him as an assistant. Their father, Bob Hurley Sr., is the Hall of Fame coach at famed St. Anthony High School in Jersey City.
Hurley replaces Jim Baron, who was fired after a 7-24 season. Over 11 seasons, Baron was 184-165 at Rhode Island, but never led the Rams into the NCAA Tournament.
At Wagner, the Hurley brothers posted a 38-23 record over two seasons, including a 25-6 mark in 2011-12. The Seahawks were defeated in the semifinals of the Northeast Conference Tournament.
