The Rhode Island Rams have fired head basketball coach Jim Baron after 11 years of service with two years left on his contract, the New York Times' Pete Thamel reports. Baron has a record of 183-167 for the Rams, but the Rams finished 7-24 this season (4-12 in the Atlantic 10), and the school clearly doesn't see itself associated with that type of failure.

Rhode Island has reportedly fired head coach Jim Baron after a 7-24 season. Baron had a 183-167 record in 11 years as head coach of the Rams.
The Rams finished 13th in the A-10, the lowest finish they've had in the conference since Baron took over. In fact, before this season, Rhode Island has won 20 games or more the past four years, including reaching the semifinals of the NIT tournament in 2010. Baron wasn't able to lead the Rams to the NCAA tournament in his 11 years, however, which Thamel reports was a key factor in the decision to let him go. In addition, Baron kicked the Rams' leading scorer, Jamal Wilson, off the team during this season.
