ACC Tournament 2012 Bracket Update: Virginia Tech Tops Clemson, 68-63

No. 10 Virginia Tech has not lost an opening round game in the ACC men's basketball tournament since 2006. The Hokies kept their streak alive in a 68-63 win over the No. 7 Clemson Tigers on Thursday night.

These two teams split their regular season series, with each getting a two-point win over the other. This game might have been just as close if Clemson had been able to match Virginia Tech’s 85 percent shooting from the free throw line. The Tigers shot nine of 15 from the line, hitting just three of seven in the final two minutes of play.

Erick Green led the Hokies with 24 points. He and Dorenzo Hudson combined for a total of 43 points for Virginia Tech; no other Hokie scored in double figures.

Clemson had four players scoring in double digits, led by Devin Coleman off the bench with 15 points. The Tigers bested their opponent from the floor, hitting 46 percent of their field goals compared to just 41.5 percent for the Hokies. In the end, losing the free throw battle proved to be the difference.

Virginia Tech faces second-seeded Duke in the quarterfinals. That game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Eastern at Phillips Arena in Atlanta, Ga.
