After 12 years in the NBA and four as a college basketball analyst for ESPN, Hubert Davis is returning to his alma mater.

A member of the University of North Carolina Tar Heels from 1988 through 1992, Davis has been hired by UNCH coach Roy Williams to serve as an assistant on the Tar Heels’ coaching staff. He’ll replace Jerod Haase, who was recently named head coach of the University of Alabama-Birmingham Blazers.

The move gives the Tar Heels another prominent figure on staff to help with recruiting, while the ESPN “College GameDay” crew just got a little less giggly.

Davis, whom many fans of the ESPN broadcast liked for his ability to handle colleague Digger Phelps and tactfully pick his spots on when to be serious and when to be downright weird on camera, will leave a gaping hole in ESPN’s roster of on-air college basketball talent.

While at North Carolina, Davis poured in more than 1,600 points in his college career, appeared in three Sweet Sixteens and one Final Four, and averaged 21 points a game during the 1991-1992 season.

Now, with Davis leaving his television post for a return to the coaching ranks, one must consider the pending decision of former Duke Blue Devils player Jay Bilas to make the very same move.

Let the speculation ensue.
