John Calipari Announces Ambitious Scheduling Changes For Kentucky

John Calipari says Kentucky has agreed to play Baylor in back-to-back seasons, will renew its series with North Carolina in 2013-14, and is in talks to begin a series with Duke.

John Calipari made headlines earlier this month when he stated that Kentucky was no longer a “traditional program” and that Wildcats fans would have to accept that as the reason behind the end of their series’ with traditional rivals Indiana and North Carolina.

Coach Cal made another splash on Wednesday, as he took to his computer to announce a two-year scheduling agreement between UK and Baylor. The first game of the contract will take place next season in Lexington, while the second will occur during the 2013-14 season and will be played at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas. The stadium just so happens to be the site of the Final Four in 2014.

“When we schedule, I want to create experiences, not just games,” Calipari wrote. “I want to schedule events that grandfathers and grandsons will be talking about 25 years from now. That’s part of what Kentucky basketball is about; part of what has made this place so unique. Those experiences mean our fans can go to those games in addition to another 20,000 fans that never get to go to the games.”

Calipari went on to say that the North Carolina series will be resumed in 2013-14, and that he is in talks with Mike Krzyzewski about a multi-year, neutral site series with Duke “that will be played around the country in the best facilities.”

“The games would take place on the same weekend every year and would be THE GAME to watch,” Calipari wrote.
