The Virginia Tech Hokies landed a prized basketball recruit prior to last season in Dorian Finney-Smith. The Virginia native started 30 of 33 games and made the ACC All-Freshman team, but it appears as though his time at VT is already coming to an end.
Dorian Finney-Smith Transferring From Virginia Tech
ACC All-Freshman player Dorian Finney-Smith is planning on transferring away from Virginia Tech. The freshman is leaving the school after just one season with the team.

David Teel of the Daily Press reports that Finney-Smith plans to transfer before next season. Finney-Smith’s mother Desiree Finney requested her son’s release from the school last weekend. Virginia Tech associate athletic director Tom Gabbard confirmed that he and head coach James Johnson met with the player and his mother and will be providing the release.
“J.J.‘s position is going to be if you don’t want to be at Virginia Tech and you’re unhappy here, we don’t want you here,” Gabbard said. “We’re trying to build something. You only go through this [playing college basketball] once, and you need to be happy.”
Gabbard added that Tech will grant Finney-Smith his release to a school “not in direct competition” with the Hokies, meaning an ACC rival.
A source that Teel spoke with stated that Finney-Smith was never comfortable while at VT. His likely post-transfer destination is Gainesville, home of the Florida Gators.
